The Difference Between Non-Organic and Organic Meat
At Market Meats, we are proud to offer a selection of premium organic meat products to our Vancouver community. If you’ve been in our store before, you may have noticed a price difference between our organic and non-organic meat products and wondered why organic meat costs more. Whether or not you choose to eat organic is totally up to you! However, we’ve made a comparison between organic and non-organic meat so that you have the information in front of you when you choose to purchase your premium meats from our Kitsilano butcher shop.
What is Organic Meat?
Several conditions need to be met in order to qualify as organic meat:
- Animals must be fed 100% organic feed
- The organic feed must be grown in soil that is free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers
- Animals must not be given antibiotics or hormones
- Animals must be allowed to graze in open pastures
What is Non-Organic Meat?
Non-organic meat has similar nutritional value when compared to organic meat, however they differ in these ways:
- Animals may be given antibiotics or hormones
- The antibiotics and hormones can enter the bodies of people who eat it
- Farming conditions are not as strictly regulated
Effects of Hormones & Antibiotics
The hormones and antibiotics that are given to farm animals can end up entering the bodies of the people who eat non-organic meat. According to the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, there may be a link between hormones in food and increased incidences of certain types of cancer, thyroid diseases, obesity, diabetes, asthma, and more. Antibiotics that may be left over in non-organic meat can affect the healthy bacteria that create balance in the human digestive system.
What you eat is ultimately your decision, and we are happy to offer all types of organic and non-organic meat products – they’re always high quality and delicious at Market Meats!
