3 Best Ways To Cook Roast Ham
Baked honey glazed ham
This recipe is yummy and easy way to cook roast ham for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. This can provide up to 6 servings with a total prep time of 20 minutes. This should be ready in 2 hours.
The ingredients include: 1 eight pound smoked ham, 2 tablespoons of mustard, 1 cup of brown sugar (packed firmly), ½ cup honey, whole cloves, slices of canned pineapple rings, maraschino cherries, 1 cup of white wine, and 1 cup of ginger ale (7 Up will do).
To prepare, the oven must be preheated to 250 degrees F. If you are in a hurry to serve this then 300 degrees F will also work. Remove first most of the fat in the ham and also the rind. An even layer of 1/8 inch of fat can be left out to get the best result for this recipe. Place the ham in the roasting pan. Make sure to line this pan with heavy duty aluminum foil, the primary purpose of which is for you not to succumb to the massive clean-up after you are done with the recipe.
Score the remaining fat in the ham, making diamond patterns as you go along. In a bowl, combine the mustard, honey, and the brown sugar. Rub this sauce all over the ham, making sure that the sauce is pressed to the cut marks. Place the clove firmly in the middle of each diamond pattern in the ham. Also with toothpicks secure the pineapple rings to the ham. At the center of the pineapple slices, put the cherries and secure them with toothpicks.
Bake the ham for up to 4 hours depending on the weight of the ham. If you cannot figure this out for sure, just make sure that the internal temperature of the ham reads 140 degrees F using a meat thermometer. Baste the ham with a ginger ale and wine mix every 30 minutes. In the latter part of the cooking, baste it with its pan juices. When cooked let it sit for 30 minutes before carving.
Serve the remaining sauce from the pan separately as a dip for the carved ham.
Balsamic and dijon-glazed ham with pearl onions
This ham recipe is quite different from the others but in a good way. This recipe can produce up to 12 servings with a prep time of only 30 minutes. The ham can be ready in just 2 hours.
The ingredient for this one are as follows: 1 cup of brown sugar, 2 pounds of pearl onions, 5 tablespoons of high quality aged balsamic vinegar, 3 tablespoons of dijon-style mustard, diced butter (1/4 cup), 1 teaspoon salt, ½ cup of water, and 1 10-pound half ham shank, fully cooked with the fat trimmed to ½ inch thick.
To prepare this recipe you need to first cook the pearl onions in a large pot of salted boiling water for 2 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and drain. The onions can be prepared a day before but be sure it is covered and refrigerated. Trim the root of the onion and peel it before setting it aside.
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. While the oven is heating up, combine the brown sugar, dijon mustard, and the balsamic vinegar in a small bowl to make the balsamic glaze. Set the glaze aside as you prepare the onions in 11x7x2-inch glass baking dish. Add just 2/3 of the balsamic glaze to the baking dish together with salt, butter, water, and pepper. Toss the onions and then cover it with aluminum foil.
Score the ham with diamond patterns. Bake the ham in the roasting pan for 45 minutes. Place the onions in the baking dish in the oven too. Roast the ham and the onions for 25 minutes. After this, roast the ham and the onions for another 50 minutes but this time the cover on the onions must be removed. Baste the ham with the balsamic glaze. Roast and baste the ham until it is deep brown. Glaze further with the balsamic mix every 10 minutes. Check the internal temperature of the ham. It must reach 140 degrees F.
Serve the ham in a large platter. Serve the ham and the onion mixture separately.
Herb crusted fresh ham
This ham recipe has a surprising ingredient – lavender. This herb is more common in cosmetics but it can also be used for cooking. To get this right, a little amount must be used. The herb crusted fresh ham can have 6-8 servings. Preparation time is 20 minutes and you should be able to enjoy it in 2 hours time.
The ingredients are as follows: 1 tablespoon chopped thyme (fresh), 1 teaspoon chopped rosemary, a teaspoon chopped fresh tarragon, ½ teaspoon of dried lavender flowers (make sure to sue the culinary lavender, untreated), half of fresh ham (bone-in) that is preferably shank end with skin (the ham must be rubbed with coarse salt and black pepper, 2 cups of chicken stock.
In a bowl mix the thyme, rosemary, and tarragon together with the lavender. Rub the mixture to the ham. Let the herbs marinate for up 45 minutes. While waiting preheat the oven to 350 degree F. Put the ham in a roasting pan and bake it for 25 minutes per pound or until the internal temperature of the meat reaches 150 degrees F. Transfer the ham to a wire rack and bake it further for 30 minutes.
Let the ham stand for 30 minutes before carving and serving.
